The Ethnographic Center has a particular sensitivity and orientation towards the Balkans and the Black Sea. It deals with and presents important findings from three major and popular topics. A. Anastenaria, where the natural space (konaki) is on the first floor of our Center. With special space for the konaki and the icons, we have put together a collection that is perhaps the largest inside and outside of Greece with more than 2,500 tamas of popular worship from Roman times to the present day. B. The Thracian Kalogero, a significant event of popular worship which was first recorded in 1879 by Georgios Vizyinos. The entire action with its performing troupe and its magico-religious masks in an interactive development with projections and information as it still survives in Meliki by the local Thracians from the village of Kosti in Thrace. C. Balkan Masks In the complete national collection of Greek masks and considering the area of the Balkans and the Black Sea as a common place of performative magico-religious actions in recent years, we have put together a collection with corresponding Greek masks from events and ceremonies of the inhabitants of the Balkans. The common near-temporal performance of the folk events of the Twelve Days in the Christian world of the Balkans lends a pandemic celebratory atmosphere which may seemingly differ in its particularities, but the core remains the same. Research, record, interact and present. The Giorgis Melikis Ethnographic Center - Mask Research Center has collaborated until today with exhibitions, announcements, synergies, installations with the Ministry of Culture (Archaeological Authority of Antiquities of Imathia, Halkidiki), National Bank Educational Foundation, Universities of AUT, Macedonia, Ioannina, Thessaly, Municipality of Thessaloniki, Salamina , Polygyrou, Kavala, Folklore and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia-Thrace, Thessaloniki Concert Hall, ART Thessaloniki, ERT, galleries etc. He has organized exhibitions with works by Professors of the School of Fine Arts of AUTH, an exhibition with engraving works by Vassos Katrakis, an exhibition in memory of Christos Tsolakis, an exhibition with masks at the Byzantine Museum of Veria, an exhibition with masks at the archaeological museum of Polygyros, an exhibition with masks at the Folklore Museum and the Ethnological Museum of Macedonia, an exhibition of masks at the Salamis Town Hall, an installation on the theme of Kavafis, etc.

- They said for us | Λ. Κέντρο Μελίκης
They said about us Carolos Papoulias: "With your authentic and serious research into the tradition, the Greece of our Soul and heart is highlighted" Dora Stratou 1977: "It is very important for young people and in their youth to be recognized for their work, like you" Samuel Beau Bowie: "You're doing a great job, I'm glad you're teaching me about Macedonia. Remember me!" Phoebus Anogianakis: "My honey, you have passion and stubbornness" Markos Dragoumis: "I consider Melikis to be a leading scholar of traditional music in Northern Greece. His shows are the most interesting on Greek television" Domna Samiou: "My George, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I envy all your work. I admire you bro" Dimitris Pandermalis: "Melikis connects to today what I knew from antiquity". Manolis Andronikos: "You didn't become an archaeologist but you are a great recorder and folklorist" Dinos Christianopoulos: "I admire and envy Melikis at the same time. He does things that are not easily done in Greece, for things that are lost. He stubbornly persists" Dimitris Themelis: "I worked with Melikis. He is a great researcher and connoisseur of tradition. His offer for our music and dance things is great. His offer is priceless" Christos Tsolakis: "Melikis is tradition itself! She sings great, she talks to ease all the language idioms and clichés. My friend George does not record the tradition but nurtures and magnifies it. It is a significant and emblematic form for our popular culture. I can't find a truer exponent of it" Dimitris Dimitriadis: "Giorgis honors me with his friendship. He is not a man who is opposed to tradition and authenticity. He has her in him. He is a model researcher. It teaches us that we must dream of tradition. The past for Melikis is a continuous present" Thomas Korovinis: "Yorgis is a perceptive person who set goals and visions from a very early age, which he implemented. He created an original work. He is a primary researcher” Angeliki Kottaridi: "Yorgis is an operator himself. It is an element of the place. He does not describe rites, but he performs the rites himself. It overcomes limits by stepping on fire. It is the means to get in touch with ancient ceremonies and ancient events" Rena Loutzakis: "Laikos Chimonas and many of his recordings are exemplary. For everything good and different I was "forced" to buy his publications. It represents reality" Kate Kamilaki: "I have known Melikis as a folklorist since the 70s. I really appreciate him and he has had an enviable career so far" Kostas Tsianos: "Melikis' recordings are amazing, unique. She reminds me of Samiu, but he does more things now. It worthily continues the story of Merlieu, Dora Stratou, Simon Karras, Samiou, Anogianakis and Papantoniou" Alexandra Goulaki-Voutiras: "Melikis is also a good painter. He does not stay at the level of a naive performance or popular expression, but uses various means with comfort and ingenuity. A tambourine turns into a tree and resists the wind. Instruments play. The trumpet fills the blue of the sea, houses and instruments travel" Rula Alavera: "I met Melikis through my husband Telemachus Alavera, but mainly through Alki Kyriakidou-Nestoros who valued him very much not only as a folklorist, but mainly as a practitioner of ethnology" Agathon Iakovidis: "Melikis is a blessing for Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece" Philip Grapsas: "A big thank you, George Melikis, for all that you offer us. History without song does not exist and you write history" Achilleas Tsiaras: "Giorgis considers me one of his spiritual children"
